What Is a Payroll Administrator?

A payroll administrator is part of the accounting or payroll department and is responsible for paying employees accurately and on time. They ensure that employees receive the correct amount of pay, correctly calculate tax withholdings, as well as insure the tax withholdings are remitted to the appropriate tax authority.  A payroll professional must keep current with all tax regulations and be able to maintain strict confidentiality.

A payroll administrator is responsible for:

• Processing payroll according to the organizations’ payroll schedule
• Entering new hire information and changes
• Responding to employee’s questions regarding their pay checks
• Preparing journal entries into the organization’s accounting system
• Ensuring that benefits deductions and taxation are recorded correctly

How do I become a Payroll Administrator?

Register for payroll courses at schools and colleges offering training in accounting and payroll, which will provide the fundamental principals and knowledge of payroll techniques.  One you have completed a certificate or diploma program you can apply for payroll certification through the Canadian Payroll Association (CPA).
